At this year’s conference, we plan to provide an exchange of information about how soils and their health effect watersheds and flood control structures and how that impacts communities, municipalities, floodplains and floodplain managers, agricultural producers, irrigation districts, soil and water conservation districts, public works agencies, engineers and designers, county managers, land management agencies, tribes, regulators, suppliers, contractors, and individual citizens across New Mexico. The conference will also strive to provide information about funding opportunities including grants, loans, and cost sharing to improve soil health, structure maintenance, and dam safety while advocating for improved watershed management and dam design, operations, maintenance and safety across New Mexico.

“Back to the Future: Building Resilience from Lessons Learned”
May 1-3, 2024
Ruidoso Convention Center, Ruidoso, NM
Ruidoso Convention Center, Ruidoso, NM
Past floods, dam incidents, and watershed restoration efforts offer valuable lessons for building future resilience. By examining what has worked—and what has not—water managers and communities can better anticipate risks, prioritize investments, and adapt operations to changing conditions. Applying these lessons is key to strengthening watersheds and dam systems for the challenges ahead.

Isleta Resort & Casino
Through sustainable conservation, restoration, and distribution of watershed resources. This includes the process of creating and implementing plans, programs, and projects to conserve and enhance watershed functions that affect and are affected by the people, plants and animals within the watershed boundary and its area of influence. Features and/or components of a watershed that people seek to manage to include: soils, plants, wildlife, agriculture, mineral resources, energy, water supply, water quality, drainage, stormwater runoff, water rights and the overall planning and utilization of watersheds; with long term conservation, restoration, and sustainability as goals. Landowners, farm and ranch operators, land use agencies, range and forest managers, water resource managers, irrigation districts, public works agencies, stormwater management experts and managers, environmental specialists and regulators, individual citizens, communities, and tribes must all play an integral part in accomplishing successful holistic watershed management -individually and collectively.

“Impacts of Wildfires on Dams & Watersheds”
October 12-14, 2022
Isleta Resort and Casino
Isleta Resort and Casino
Wildfires can significantly alter watershed function, increasing erosion, runoff, and sediment delivery to rivers and reservoirs. These post‑fire impacts can reduce reservoir capacity, strain dam outlets and spillways, and elevate flood and safety risks. Understanding wildfire impacts is critical for protecting dam infrastructure and guiding post‑fire watershed recovery and investment.

"Healthy Watersheds, Extreme Precipitation, Safe Dam O&M, and How to Fund It"
September 29th - October 1st, 2021
Raton, NM
Raton, NM
Healthy watersheds and safe dam operations and maintenance (O&M) are essential to New Mexico’s water security and public safety. Degraded watersheds can increase sedimentation and flood risks, while aging dams and deferred maintenance threaten system reliability. Addressing these challenges requires sustained investment and thoughtful funding strategies that link watershed health with long‑term dam safety and performance.
